Hutton North ward in Brentwood covers the Long Ridings Estate, Hutton Poplars, Alexander Lane and Wash Road areas.
I was elected to Brentwood Borough Council to represent the ward in 2004, with just under 60% of the vote. I went on to be re-elected in 2008 polling 71% of the vote and doubling my majority and was once again returned as councillor in the 2012 and 2016 elections. An active representative, I make a point of being out and about in the ward speaking to residents and looking for any areas, which are of concern or in need of attention. I regularly attend meetings with the two residentsí associations in the ward and have a close working relationship with them.
In addition to being Leader of Brentwood Council, I also take my role as local ward member very seriously and make a point of ensuring the residents in Hutton North are kept up to date with all that is going on. I have contributed to the local residentsí magazines, puts out personal newsletters informing people of what is happening and hold open surgeries in and around the ward allowing people to have easy access should they have any issues that they need help with.
Over the years, I have worked hard alongside residents, campaigning on a number of matters. I have successfully fought against over development on planning matters, ensuring the voices of local people are heard. I have also launched a local volunteer scheme in Hutton Poplars to support the environment of the wooded areas and have taken part in action days, helping remove rubbish, enhance planting and encourage wildlife to the area. More recently, I worked with residents and local organisations to secure the future of the Hutton Community Centre, which since it relaunched in July 2016, is going from strength to strength.
With three primary schools in the ward, I am keen to support their fundraising efforts through attending Christmas Bazaars and Summer Fetes. I have worked with the Schools and local residents with some success to help alleviate some of the parking issues that inevitably affect those living near by.
I have actively campaigned for and delivered a 20mph restriction across the Long Ridings Estate and in Hutton Poplars. Following concerns raised by residents, a VAS sign, encouraging people to slow down in Wash Road has also been installed. Issues of anti-social behaviour, illegal traveller incursions and fly-tipping have also been tackled and I work closely with the Council and police on such matters.
In May 2017, I broadened my area of responsibility by becoming the County Councillor for the Brentwood Hutton division. This includes all of Hutton, in addition to Herongate, Ingrave and West Horndon.
I also hold the portfolio as Cabinet
Member for Resources at the County
